So it will be 12/6/73...that is, the officially selected highlights:
China>Rider, Dark Star, Eyes of the World, and Greatest Story.
(Will ship in May.)

Of course there wasn't room on one disc for Stella Blue, so that had to go - I guess they'll just fade out at the end of Eyes. And never mind the best-ever Here Comes Sunshine, which wasn't worth including. (I suppose that cut at the end vetoed it automatically!)
Perhaps the dead.net folks felt guilty about releasing too many complete shows lately? But as they say, "you all have copies anyway..."

They could make it work if they included the rest of this show on future bonus discs (if the subscription thing takes off). The chance of that much foresight is doubtfull though. Hopefully it stays under the radar and doesn't get pulled.

Trying to put a positive spin on this, which is nearly impossible, but here it goes. I wonder if this means that they are going to pick one of the other shows proximal to 12-6 as an RT release. I don't think any of the December ones are better than 12-6, however I wouldn't mind seeing another Nov '73 complete show out there or maybe 12-2. They did use a December bonus disc with the Winterland boxes, right?

Most of 12/2/73 has already been released on DP14. I think they should really release every show complete from november and december of 73, the winterland box set is great but I think these two months of shows represent the ultimate high point of collective improvisation and smooth transitions between songs, and every show is pretty much golden.

this is the stuff that makes me feel all panicky. I've been doing WAY too much listening and not enough downloading. I'm happy to buy official releases, but watching the rest of a show slip away like that...

I agree with the overall sentiment here. Leaving the best track from 12/6/73 show (HCS) on the cutting room floor is a real tragedy.

That said, I'm pretty excited to hear how the Cleveland Dark Star sounds in all of its pristine glory.

Would they have omitted HCS because of the tape flip? The circulating version of this has long gaps in HCS and Eyes. Is the vault copy any different?

I don't believe that there are any cuts in Eyes, and the only flaw with HCS is that the last 20 seconds or so is patched with a very low quality aud source. As someone else mentioned, they could eaily patch that using another show.

i agree that is really disappointing. i had this show in mp3 for years, and i'm REALLY glad i recently downloaded the Charlie Miller transfer in FLAC from a certain favorite website.

the performances they're including are strong. The Dark Star, is of course a all-timer. but i'm not sure if its even the strongest part of the show... i feel the China>Rider may be the best of the year, and the Eyes is certainly no slouch either. But only a numb skull wouldn't include the HCSS...blasphemy i say! one of the finest examples of Garcia's genius i can think of...

such a shame this show is getting chopped up!

The vault is full excerpts from shows that could be released as a bonus disk rather than just rot away in the vault.

The Rhino gang has never been about using common sense. A limit of 10 Europe 72 boxsets? Are they nuts?

I love that China/Rider. For me it's the one that shows the direction they're taking. The 74 shows (particularly 24/2)all expand the link between CCS and IKYR that blazes a trail of collective improvisational music. I agree with Cliff - this show should be a stand-alone release.

So the Mad Slasher is loose, and couldn't even leave Cleveland its little bit of Sunshine. Gee, that's some "bonus."

I can't help being disapointed by this. For starters, the 12/6/73 performance certainly deserves to be released in its entirety. I would have preferred getting the HCS instead of either the Eyes of the World or China/Rider...

Bonus discs should be comprised of portions of music from performances that can't be released as complete shows due to being incomplete, sonic issues, etc. They could easily patch in a snippet to complete the cut in Here Comes Sunshine and release this show in its entirety...

I think they would help their case, of they were more upfront with the "whys", in their decision making . Doesn't mean we will agree with their choices , but I might help understand what was their thinking .
We shall have to see if thee is any reason for the bleeding chunk, issued as a "bonus disc". , It would be odd if it is a stand alone . The 12/4/73 bonus disc with the Winterland 73 set, made some sense , but this sort of fucks any further releases from the show . They should have put that "Stella" on , and put some of the other stuff as "filler" etc. later . or... just do the whole show...

I think the thing about the edited bits (that get included or excluded) is that it is tantamount to editing one's own experience of a show. We all tune into the experience differently, making all of our favorite and not-so-favorite parts very important to the whole thing. The friends I ran into in the concourse of the Omni during drums/space? I would leave that in, because that would not have happened in my life otherwise. There's no way to win arguing against the whole show release argument. I would never claim to be the one with the authority to delete all of the "El Pasos" from a release, unless it's one I'm burning to play in the car for myself.
